Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a therapy that improves the functioning of the lymphatic system. This is achieved mainly through gently rhythmic circling movements of the skin that stimulate the contractions of the lymphatic vessels.

As a result, a greater amount of metabolic waste products and excess fluid are removed from the body's tissues and enter the lymphatic system. As the fluid passes through a series of lymph glands it is cleansed of dead cells and bacteria and the clean lymph is then returned to the blood stream. The fluid also delivers antibodies and nutrients to the tissue to aid the body's natural defense system.

Lymphoedema: Lymphostatic oedema is when there is an inadequacy of the capacity of transport of the lymphatic system as a result fluid builds up in the tissue which can be classified as follows:

Secondary: - have a known cause or disease, surgery, trauma and some cancer treatments
Primary: - idiopathic relating to a malformation of lymph vessels or nodes, congenital or hereditary

The four corner stones of care are MLD, skin care, compression therapy and decongestive exercise.

The Benefits: -

  • Treatment and management of lymphoedema
  • MLD alleviates fluid congestion: swollen ankles, tired puffy eyes, swollen legs during pregnancy and fluid retention due to pre-menstrual syndrome
  • The healing process of broken bones, torn ligaments and sprains can be accelerated, enhanced and pain can be eased. It also helps in post operative or traumatic bruising and swelling
  • It has successfully been used to help heal leg ulcers and assist in treating conditions arising from venous insufficiency
  • Chronic inflammatory conditions like sinusitis, arthritis, acne and rosacea can be improved with the application of MLD

What to expect:- The first visit includes a consultation where you and the therapist agree a treatment plan. The sessions may vary from 30-60 minutes depending on your requirements. Where appropriate the therapist will work in conjunction with your Physician or other health care practitioners.
